A wedding candy buffet is one of the easiest ways to add color, personality, and a little fun to a reception. The question most couples ask first is simple: how much candy do we actually need?

The right answer depends on your guest count, whether the candy buffet is the main dessert or a take-home favor, and the size of the containers guests will use. A few straightforward planning rules can help you order confidently without buying far too much or running out before the evening ends.

Start With Your Guest Count

For a candy buffet that is one dessert option among cake, cookies, or other treats, plan on about 1/4 pound of candy per guest. If the candy buffet will be a main dessert feature or guests will be filling favor bags to take home, consider planning for closer to 1/2 pound per guest.

That means:

Guest CountApproximate Amount of Candy
50 guests13–25 pounds
100 guests25–50 pounds
150 guests38–75 pounds
200 guests50–100 pounds

The lower end works well when the display is mostly decorative and there are other desserts. The higher end is better when guests are encouraged to fill bags, cups, or boxes.

Choose Enough Variety

A candy buffet looks more inviting when it has a mix of colors, shapes, and textures. For most weddings, six to ten candy choices is plenty. Too few can make the display feel sparse; too many can make ordering and setup needlessly complicated.

Try to combine a few categories:

  • Individually wrapped favorites for easy, clean serving
  • Bright fruit candies for color
  • Chewy candy or gummies for variety
  • Lollipops or other tall pieces to add height
  • Mints or hard candy for an elegant finishing touch

You can match the candy colors to the wedding palette, but do not feel limited to one color. A coordinated mix is usually more appealing than an exact match in every container.

Plan the Display Around Your Containers

Use clear jars, bowls, and apothecary containers in different heights. Taller containers make a table look fuller without requiring every jar to be packed to the top. Scoops or tongs are useful for unwrapped candy, while individually wrapped candy can often be served directly from a bowl.

Set out small bags, boxes, or cups so guests know they can take candy with them. If you are using favor bags, consider putting a simple sign near the table, such as “Please enjoy a sweet treat.”

Individually Wrapped or Loose Candy?

Individually wrapped candy is usually the easiest choice for a wedding reception. It is cleaner to serve, easier for guests to carry, and better for a display that may be out for several hours. It also works especially well if guests will fill favor bags.

Loose candy can create a polished look in clear jars, but it needs scoops or tongs and should be protected from heat and humidity. Many couples use both: wrapped candy for the main selection and a few loose options for color and texture.

Order Early and Add a Little Extra

Order your candy several weeks before the wedding so you have time to organize the display and make any last-minute adjustments. Add roughly 10–15% extra if your guest count may increase, if the buffet is also replacing favors, or if you expect children at the reception.

When in doubt, having a little extra is usually better than running out—and leftover candy is easy to send home with guests or enjoy after the wedding.

Make Planning Simple

A well-planned candy buffet does not need to be complicated. Start with your number of guests, decide whether candy is a dessert, favor, or both, then choose a colorful mix of individually wrapped and display-friendly options.
